Individual Grants in Support of Community Science
Application Process
Purpose
This grant will be awarded to individuals that are not necessarily affiliated with a college or university. We are hoping to encourage individuals to expand their mycological pursuits. This could include cultivation, education, sequencing, or any activity that builds community around the wonders of mycology. What we will not fund: for profit endeavors; salaries; travel outside of the PNW. Grantees will be expected to present their results to OMS. Grants are limited to residents of the states of Washington and Oregon.
Guidelines
Applying for a Maggie Rogers grant can be daunting, and you might be wondering how to address certain sections of the application. The following are guidelines meant to clarify five specific sections of the application, so that the OMS Scholarship Committee can better evaluate your proposal. They are not intended to limit your own thoughts or ideas.
- Project goals. Describe what you want to accomplish, and what is novel or interesting about your project. Lay out your plan to reach that accomplishment. What do you envision the end result of the project will be, and what is the estimated time frame for completion of your project?
- Budget. List the costs involved in carrying out your project. Your budget can be itemized. Provide $ amounts if possible.
- Letter of recommendation. Please have your reference writer state how they know you, or include this information when submitting the recommendation letter to OMS.
- Benefit to community. State how the results of your project will be of value or interest to others. “Community” can mean specific end-users of your project, OMS members, and/or the general public. The results might be a tangible product, might contribute to an existing pool of knowledge, or other.
- Sharing your results. In addition to a required writeup in the OMS newsletter, the results of your project can be shared in other ways, including a short talk or presentation or a YouTube (or like) video. You can also present your work at the OMS Scholarship table during the Fall Mushroom Show in October.
Judging
Applications will be accepted any time. Expect at least 4 weeks for processing if approved. Winning applicants will be notified by e-mail or telephone.
Application Evaluation Criteria:
- Is the application complete?
- Does the application provide sufficient information to allow a decision to be made?
- Has the applicant followed the above guidelines?
- Does the proposal and it’s scope seem reasonable?
