Spring Mushroom Camp

May 12, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - May 14, 2017 @ 12:00 pm

The OMS Spring Foray is scheduled for May 12-14th of 2017.

This year we are returning to the Suttle Lake United Methodist Camp outside of Sisters OR! This is a beautiful location surrounded by the Deschutes National Forest. Camp participants stay in two lodges with restrooms and showers (Wesley Meadow Lodge and Pioneer Lodge) and in cabins nestled among the trees. Central shower houses provide restroom facilities for the cabins. We really like this location and there are often Morels to be found throughout the camp. We will house everyone who is listed on your registration in the same room or cabin (unless your party if very big). Smaller groups or individuals may be housed with other attendees as necessary. The camp staff prepares tasty and wholesome meals. Vegetarian options are available at every meal. Vegan options are available upon request. However, the camp staff needs to know ahead of time, so please request vegan or vegetarian meals on your registration application. If you have special dietary needs or allergies, please include this information with your registration application and we will see what can be accommodated (within reason, please).

The foray is a great place to learn about mushrooms and discover new areas to hunt. It’s also a great opportunity to meet and socialize with other mycophiles. This is a great time for the novice, the expert, and everyone in between. The Sisters area has a very diverse range of habitats which yield a great diversity of mushrooms, plants, lichens, birds, and so forth. We hope to have a great mushroom year!!!

OMS camps are a great learning environment. At the Spring Mycology Camp, we will:

  • Review spring mushrooms species including edibles and non-edibles
  • Discuss vegetation and mushroom habitat in the area
  • Conduct field trips to collect a wide variety of mushrooms
  • Offer macroscopic and microscopic study of mushrooms
  • Present evening programs on both Friday and Saturday.
  • Walk through and discuss specimens.

Our guest this year is mycologist is Dr. Michael Beug. He will be presenting at our programs on Friday and Saturday nights.

Dr. Beug is Professor Emeritus of The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington where he taught chemistry, mycology and organic farming for 32 years. He coauthored Ascomycete Fungi of North America, published in March 2014. His mushroom photographs have appeared in over 50 books and articles on mushrooms. Dr. Beug is active in the North American Mycological Association (NAMA) and the Pacific Northwest Key Council. His specialties are the genus Ramaria, all toxic and hallucinogenic mushrooms, and Ascomycetes. Dr. Beug is a wealth of information and is well liked by all. We are very happy to have him back.

On Saturday we will go out in groups to collect mushrooms. We always love to look for edibles but we also are interested in cataloging all the mushrooms growing in the area each season. We will have microscopes, books, and experienced Society members on hand to help you with the identification of mushrooms. We archive our findings and provide a copy to the Forest Service.

On Sunday morning we will have a walk-through of our finds and be cleaned up and out of the camp by noon.

Check in begins Friday, May 12th at 4pm at Wesley Meadows Lodge. Dinner will be at 6:30 pm.

Please do not come to the camp before 4pm as there is a group leaving that day.

A week or two before the event you will receive an email with a schedule and more details on what to bring.

We are always interested in volunteers to help at the camp (especially people to help lead field trips). Please indicate if you are interested during the registration process.

Children are welcome. Dogs are not allowed.

You can check out the camp website if you would like to know more:

A note on accommodations: Please be aware that the housing at the camp is very basic.
