OMS General Meeting

7:30 pm

Program: “Staying Safe in the Outdoors – Woods Safety for Mushroomers”

Speakers: Kent Stuart and Gary Burgess, Yamhill Search and Rescue

With the fall season quickly approaching, we will be heading out to the woods to gather mushrooms. Have you walked, looking down when you forage for “fungi gold,” only to look up and realize you are a bit disoriented?

Speakers from the Yamhill Search and Rescue Team will teach us tips and tricks to not only keep us safe in the woods, but educate us on the best gear to use, and the efforts and methodologies used to find those lost in the forests.  Find out how to prepare mentally and physically for a safe trip, learn tips and tricks for how not to get lost in the woods, and what to do if you ever find yourself lost.

Kent Stuart has lived in Oregon for more than 40 years.  He is a retired McMinnville police officer, Yamhill County Citizen’s Response Team (CERT) and wilderness survival and disaster emergency preparedness instructor.  He has been a member of the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team (YCSAR) for the past 20 years and has served as the assistant Search and Rescue Coordinator, incident commander, and wilderness survival instructor.

Gary Burgess has been a hiker and backpacker for over 20 years.  He has been a member of the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team (YCSAR) for 12 years, where he is chairperson and responsible for both administration and training of YCSAR members. He is a member and Certified Instructor on the Yamhill County Citizen’s Response Team (CERT).  He is also an instructor of land navigation and human visual tracking.
