OMS General Meeting, November 2023

6:30 pm – OMS Mushroom Identification Session
If you have found mushrooms that are in good condition, wrap them in waxed paper, aluminum foil, or a put them in a paper bag and bring them (with a spore print, if possible). Bring your field guide to reference the mushrooms that are on display.

7:00 OMS Society Business: Announcements, Introductions, or Short Presentations

7:15 pm Presentation: A glimpse into the world of lichenology! This talk will cover an introduction to lichens, including tips and tricks for lichen collection and identification, a brief discussion on lichen DNA barcoding, and the results of a lichen inventory conducted in Northern California.

Speaker: Sarah Conway (2022 Judy Roger Memorial Scholarship winner). Originally from South Carolina, Sarah received her bachelor’s degree in botany from Cal Poly Humboldt and went on to complete her master’s degree in biology this year under mycologist, Dr. Terry Henkel, studying lichens. Sarah now works as a botanist for Redwood National Park where she focuses on ecological restoration and rare plant conservation. She still makes time for fungi, volunteering on the board of the Humboldt Mycological Society and hosting community lichen walks. She’s excited to be in Portland during mushroom season!
