Registration opens for 2018 Fall Mycology Camp
The OMS Fall Mycology Camp is scheduled for October 19-21, 2018 at Camp Magruder in Rockaway Beach on the Oregon coast. Trails on the camp grounds meander through dunes, forest, and wetland areas between Smith Lake and the Pacific Ocean.
Visit the camp website at www.campmagruder.org.
OMS camps are a great learning opportunity. Our speaker this year is Joey Spatafora, head of the Botany and Plant Pathology department at Oregon State University. He is lead investigator on the 1000 Fungal Genomes project, an effort by a dozen prominent research labs and public agencies working to completely sequence the DNA of 1000 fungal species. Research at the Spatafora Lab emphasizes phylogenetics and comparative genomics in a diversity of taxonomic and ecological systems.
Our focus this year will be on DNA. Modern sequencing techniques are revolutionizing our view of fungal phylogeny and taxonomy, forcing name changes for many species. An introductory talk will be given to familiarize members with the history and technology of modern techniques for collection, extraction, identification, and sequencing of DNA.
Sharpen your field identification skills with an intermediate class on ‘Identification to the Genus Level’, presented by Dick Bishop. Learn more about the Manzanita Leccinum (a giant bolete which we are likely to find) in his Mushroom of the Month talk. Leah Bendlin will present a review of Coastal Mushrooms on Friday night so you are prepared for your field trip the following morning.
The field trips are a highlight every year, with multiple locations to choose from. Camp Magruder is a great place to start, with dunes, coastal forest, and highlands to explore. In past years we have collected over 100 species in the area and have found some rare and spectacular specimens. Other options are a hike up Neahkanie Mountain, an extensive network of 4 wheel drive OHV trails, and several state parks.
